What is Embassy Legalization?
Embassy Legalization vs. Apostille
In one of our previous articles we discussed an Apostille and explained how to obtain one on your documents. Today we’d like to explain the embassy legalization, an alternative method of authenticating a document, used for countries that are not members of the Hague Convention (see table below)
Countries which never signed the Apostille Convention do not accept or recognize an apostille as a certificate of authenticity for public documents issued in the USA.
Instead, the embassy, consular or diplomatic representative of the country in these countries legalizes and attests the documents. In most cases an Embassy Legalization will require the document to be notarized by the public notary (depending upon country of issuance), followed by authentication from the Secretary of State, the foreign affairs office i.e., US State Department, etc.. and finally the embassy of the proper country in the country of origin to which the document will be sent.
Why hire specialists for embassy legalization of your documents?
The process of obtaining Embassy Legalization can get complicated. Each foreign country has its own specific requirements, procedures and fees when asked to legalize any document. For instance, the embassy may require that the contents of the document should be translated from English into their country’s native language and that such translation also be authenticated by the respective departments. Also in other cases, they may require fees to be paid in local currency and that also via money orders, embassy may be located in different city than the foreign office creating the need for local courier and providing prepaid labels for return etc.
At Apoling Solutions we undertake the authentication process on behalf of our clients, removing the need for the client to undergo all these complicated and cumbersome procedures.
