Every translation shall be approached scrupulously, assiduously and attentively, and render exactly the idea and form of the source– this loyalty constitutes both a moral and legal obligation for the translator.”

Translators should attempt to provide service of the superior quality in their professional practice.

Accuracy

The translator must translate precisely. By accurate translation we mean a translation that preserves the meaning, information, style and format of the source document, submitted for translation. Translators are not allowed to make assumptions or changes to the meaning and data.

Confidentiality

The translator must respect, under all circumstances, discretion and confidentiality of the information contained in all documentation provided by the customer for the purpose of translation, unless otherwise required by law.  The documents submitted by the client in person, faxed or emailed cannot be disclosed for the third party, and may not be reproduced, revealed or divulged.

Neutrality and Conflict of Interest

In order to maintain professionalism, the translator must remain unbiased and declare any probable conflict of interest (including personal or ethical values and opinions) that may affect his/her performance while translating a document.

Limitation of practice

  • The translator must  be aware of  his/her linguistic boundaries and decline assignments that go beyond his/her skills, knowledge and competence.
  • The translator must only accept assignments that he/she can complete and provide with the services within the time frame (deliver the translation on or before the due date and time).
  • The translator must accept documents that he/she can translate. No work should be subcontracted to colleagues without prior written authorization.
  • The translator should possess sound knowledge of the source language and be an expert in the target language.
  • The translator should accept translation projects only for fields or subject matters where he/she has education, knowledge and experience.

Liability

The translator is responsible for his/her work and must recognize and acknowledge mistakes in the translation and do all his/her best to correct them even when the translation has been completed, in order to avoid potential liability and risk issues.

Professional Development

The Translator

  • Must pursue the professional growth – maintain, improve and expand translation skills and broad knowledge through self-educating, formal and informal continuing education.
  • Must acquire the proper terminology and enhance his/her vocabulary by creating and updating terminology files.
  • Must seek evaluative feedback and practice self-criticism concerning performance.

Respect for all parties

The translator must show respect for all parties involved in the translation project assignment, including respect for self, the translation agency and to its clients.

The translator shall respect copy rights and intellectual property. Translated documents remain the client’s exclusive property.
